Standing Up To Pressure
Scott
Some of my friends talk a lot about their sexual experiences. They keep asking me about mine. I get teased a lot because I want to wait until I'm married. In all honesty, I must say their comments get to me sometimes. But, I just keep telling myself "I won't be pressured into doing something that's against my values." Recently, I've started hanging out more with teens who think and feel as I do. That helps too.

I have been dating my girlfriend about six months. When we first started dating I told her that I had made the decision not to have sex now. She respects that. But I must admit it gets hard sometimes for me to stick to my own decision. When I get feelings that tempt me to go all the way, I make myself pull back and get those urges under control. I tell myself: "I can wait". "I can wait". Believe me I spend a lot of time saying those three words to myself-but it's working.

Our teacher gave the class an assignment to bring in advertisements that use sex to sell their products. She said to get them from a regular magazine, you know, the kind you get at the stand at the grocery store checkout. We all left class complaining because we thought we wouldn't be able to find ads like that in those magazines. To our surprise they were full of them. The teacher had us talk about the misleading messages we got from those ads about sex. The ones I remember best are:
People are in relationships just for sex.
Sex is the most important part of a relationship.
Just do it-there are no consequences.
